Spurs Magazine: What We Are and Why We're Here

INTRODUCTION

Spurs is loosely organized around the concept "having things turn out right". Have you ever gotten up in the morning, looked at the newspaper and thought, "I've had it. I'm sick of this." We have. We're sick of the mess. We Nathans want things-- meaning the earth, and even the universe -- to turn out right. In a small way, that means being kinder and gentler to each other. Really doing it, not talking about it. More "small ways": We'd like everyone have better table manners and good taste. Not wear loud shirts and build ostentatious houses. Remember Mother's Day. We'd like there to be less bitching at horse shows and around colleges and high schools and everywhere else.

Concerning the really big problems, we'd like us humans to knock off the stupid stuff before we blow up the planet. And we're tired of racism. Of hatred. Sick of people rationalizing doing anything because they want to and can. Sick of the environment being raped "because it's there". Sick of the negativity in modern culture. Sick of the garbage you can pick up on the Net. On TV. We're sick of phoniness and pretension. Sarcasm and cynicism. Spurs is our answer.

About the name of our endeavor-- Spurs. Spurs is produced by horse people, on a horse ranch. We horse people know what spurs are for. They work, don't they? That's what this magazine is: Spurs that come in through your eyeballs. Our time on earth is finite. We don't know when it will end. When we die, will we have completed the tasks that we came here to do? Will we have completed our mission on earth? Will we be the people we were born to be? Only if we get to work. For that, sometimes you need Spurs. This isn't an easy magazine. One of the greatest lines in show business was Tina Turner's, "Some people like things nice and easy, but we like them nice and .....ROUGH!" Then she'd launch into "Proud Mary". Tina has that great gravely voice, in addition to the legs. Well, we don't like things easy, either. We don't like things really rough-- but we don't mind them HARD. The easy way doesn't get you anywhere.

Our intention is that what you find here will be rewarding, satisfying and enriching. Some pieces will make you laugh hysterically. Others will move you into higher realms. Others will be sad or painful. Just like life. We want to capture that clear high note, that thread of the divine that permeates reality. That thread which we may see only at the worst times of our lives. The thread that brings us back to our purpose. That's what we present here, either in our own work or by steering you to the work of others. Some of these offerings are several pages long-- you will probably want to print them to read at your leisure. Away from the dehumanizing glare of the computer monitor.

That's what Spurs is all about: being human.
