I'm updating this page to include latest developments in the oaks/vineyards conflict. The short paragraph below presents the situation a few years ago. Still accurate in many areas.

REALLY, WHAT CAN BE DONE?

Since posting this series, I've gotten agonized e-mail saying, "They're bulldozing 50 big oak trees down the street. How can I stop them? Isn't there a state law?" No. Maybe a few local ones. Usually not. The failure of ordinances which would have protected Santa Barbara County's oak trees shows just how hard it is to fight those who would destroy them.

What to do? One path requires citizens to get better organized politically and get some laws and ordinances to protect oak trees passed. Alternatively, we can trust the trees' "stewards", the landowners who are currently cutting them down, to care for the land and its leafy occupants. Hopefully, these stewards will take a long term view which includes an accurate vision what California will be like in a generation or two, as well as a clear eyed estimate of exactly how much wine can be profitably marketed.

Which is the best approach? Beats me.

WILL ANYTHING HELP?

This is a philosophical issue. Humanity seems to be the only species which wantonly destroys its own environment, makes anything and everything into an addiction, and defiles that which is most beautiful.

Can anything help us? That's the real question.
