Our
ranch name expresses our philosophy. "Vilasa" is a Sanskrit
word meaning "delightful sport or play." Life is a wonderful
adventure when you consider it delightful play.
Rancho Vilasa is located in the beautiful Santa Ynez Valley,
about 40 minutes north east of Santa Barbara, California.
Many of the best known Peruvian ranches in the United States
are located in the Valley, making it a good place to horse
shop.
Vilasa is a private, family owned and run ranch. We raise
horses because we love them. More, we are passionate about
them. We are dedicated to producing good, strong riding horses
that will take their owners where they want to go-- be it
in the show ring or out on the trails.
THE
BIG, BEAUTIFUL PICTURE
We've
included this overview so you can see the beautiful the Santa
Ynez Valley. The unspoiled mountains of the Los Padres National
Forest are in the background. In winter, snow often dusts
their peaks. Rancho Vilasa is in the foreground. The ranch
house is in the far left. The hay storage barn is in the center.
The roof of the larger barn is barely visible on the lower
right. The green pastures mark the ranch boundary. We ride
"anywhere that isn't fenced".
THE
LARGER BARN AND OAKS
Rancho
Vilasa has a seven stall barn and a two stall barn. We try to
keep our horses out of them. Horses are herd animals who like
to move around. We keep our horses in the pastures unless they're
sick, in training or getting ready for a show. This is the larger
barn, seen through one of the magnificent white oaks indigenous
to the Valley.
THE
SMALL BARN
We
use this two stall barn primarily for gentling foals and young
horses. A baby or two has been born in it, as well.

THE
LARGER BARN
The
seven stall barn provides functional shelter for our horses
and a great space for keeping tack and gear.
Tony and Abhaya BSN welcome you.
IRRIGATED
PASTURE
Rancho
Vilasa's lower pastures are irrigated, making them green year
round and great places for mares and foals to frolic. Most of
our babies are born here.
ARENA
A
view of the Rancho Vilasa arena. The horses being worked were
bred and raised by the our family.
ROUND
PEN
Round
pens are an integral part of modern horse training. The allow
young horses to be schooled and put under saddle as gently and
naturally as possible. If you saw or read "The Horse Whisperer",
you'll know about round pen work.
UPPER
PASTURES
These
horses live the good life! The upper portion of our property
is home to our retired horses, young horses who aren't ready
for training-- and those that are easy to catch! Hills are great
for muscling horses up.
ENJOYING
THE SPRING GRASS
Our
horses relax in a herd setting. Living in a herd creates more
discliplined horses:
T they learn social manners and how to live in a hierarchy.

life's truths are best expressed not by
