The SIDE STREET CAFE
in Los Olivos, California, hosted a show of Sandra and Lily
Nathan's art. The 2 nathans show gave "Sides"
a sophisticated, hip ambiance. We ate dinner at the Cafe one
October night. A young man played piano and sang the blues.
The food, art and entertainment provided a perfect match of
sights, sounds and tastes. Sublime!
We are pleased to
present Lily Nathan's paintings and drawings and Sandy Nathan's
highly augmented cow skulls for your on-line enjoyment. The
show contains many pictures: it is slow loading. The pieces
shown here are for sale. Unfortunately, most can't be shipped.
The rustic barnwood frames are just that-- ancient 2 by 4's
or 6's that weigh a ton. Similarly, the cow skulls are fragile.
Feather decorations are even more fragile. Costs of shipping
would be prohibitive. If you're in Southern California and want
to stop by the ranch to look at any of the art, please contact
us. Otherwise, enjoy.

about the
artists:
sandy nathan
began her art career
at the age of 5 with a painting in San Francisco's De Young
Museum. Since then, Sandy Nathan studied Creative Arts at Santa
Clara University, did extensive course work in Interior Design
at Cañada College in San Mateo County, and was a Principal
Interior Designer for 10 years. She has produced and shown sculpture,
winning in shows in Santa Clara County.
"I don't know
why I started painting cow skulls. I just did. I like the skulls'
bold, uncompromising shape. You can't ignore them. Skulls, with
their reminder of death, highlight the fact that we are alive.
I like to play with the skulls, creating the unexpected. No
coyotes. No buffalo. No cactus.
"The skulls
I use were donated by animals who usually died of natural causes
on my friend Patti's huge sheep and cattle ranch up near Chico.
Sometimes you'll see a bullet hole. That's an old guy who wasn't
going to make it. All defects are authentically Western: Coyotes
chew off horn tips and caps, bones get lost or broken. Any furs
I use for ornamentation come from old fur coats. Feathers are
from domestic fowl. I use all sorts of precious and semiprecious
jewels, silver, you name it, for trims. Any breakage can be
fixed easily with crazy glue or epoxy. I have come to love crazy
glue."

lily nathan
Lily produced the work
shown here when she was a 15 year old sophomore at Santa Ynez
Valley Union High School.
Lily Nathan prefers
to say nothing about her art. She hopes it speaks to you on
its own.
